FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has proposed establishing Raleigh, North Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts as new innovation zones for wireless communications research and development. Below is a statement from Open RAN Policy Coalition Executive Director Diane Rinaldo:

“The Open RAN Policy Coalition applauds FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel’s proposal to establish “innovation zones” in Raleigh, North Carolina and Boston, Massachusetts to help spur the development and integration of Open RAN and 5G network technologies.

Private sector and government collaboration on research, development and test beds that support Open RAN deployment will go a long way towards future-proofing our telecommunications systems by encouraging innovation, competition and vendor diversity in the 5G supply chain. Today the U.S. Senate voted to pass the United States Innovation and Competition Act. Below is a statement from Open RAN Policy Coalition Executive Director Diane Rinaldo:

“The Open RAN Policy Coalition applauds the U.S. Senate for its passage of the United States Innovation and Competition Act (USICA), legislation that recognizes the importance of Open RAN in establishing supply chain resiliency and supporting innovation. 5G supply chain security has implications not only for telecom policy, but also for economic policy and economic security.

Provisions in the USICA allowing for the creation of a $1.5 billion Public Wireless Innovation Fund and $500 million for a joint semiconductor and Open RAN multilateral program, both originally authorized as part of the USA Telecommunications Act, will help bolster advanced wireless networks and future-proof our telecommunications systems.

WASHINGTON, DC –The Open RAN Policy Coalition filed comments in response to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Notice of Inquiry (NOI) on Promoting the Deployment of 5G Open Radio Access Networks.

In its comments, the Coalition writes, “the communications companies that serve markets in the United States and its partners have reached an inflection point in the development and deployment of Open RAN. In short, the commercial communications ecosystem is rapidly developing and deploying Open RAN, thereby advancing the national interests of the United States and its partners.”

The submission details Open RAN offerings that Coalition members have publicly announced as either presently available on the market or coming to market within the next 12-to-24 months, as well as the significant public interest benefits of Open RAN solutions, namely in four categories:

“The Open RAN Policy Coalition applauds the Federal Communications Commission for its unanimous vote in support of making Open RAN solutions eligible for the Secure and Trusted Communications Network Reimbursement Program. Because open and interoperable interfaces provide a foundation and architecture for security in the U.S communications supply chain, carriers should be encouraged to consider such solutions when upgrading or replacing equipment. We urge Congress to appropriate the necessary funding for this program as soon as possible.”… Read More

The Open RAN Policy Coalition today issued the following statement on the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act provisions on 5G and the wireless supply chain:

“The Open RAN Policy Coalition is extremely pleased to see that the National Defense Authorization Act conference report includes provisions, including the USA Telecommunications Act, addressing 5G innovation and the wireless supply chain. Moving to open and interoperable solutions in the RAN promotes innovation and will ensure a supply chain that is competitive and secure. WASHINGTON, DC –The Open RAN Policy Coalition todayreleased a new Policy Roadmap, outlining the steps that governments and policymakers can take to accelerate adoption of open standards in the RAN and promote a network ecosystem that is more diverse, competitive and secure.
